Dell Latitude E5550 Boot mode - HASSLE

Re-image Dell Latitude E5550 is a hassle comparing to older generations. The problem has something to do with the UEFI boot mode.

Here is what I found out to have a successful process to re-image the OS from an external CD-ROM drive. My case is using Dell Windows 7 Professional CD media.

  1. Press F12 on Dell logon screen to get into the boot menu.
  2. Change the Boot mode to enable legacy mode. UEFI boot will not work - no matter secure boot On or Off.
  3. Boot to F12 again, select "Legacy CD/DVD drive" from the boot menu. (Booting from UEFI will result a failure during the Installation)
  4. The installation will reboot the first time and it would fail. So remove the CD and select boot from the Internal hard drive.
  5. Do the same step above for the 2nd reboot, and the installation this time.

PDF does not open in IE

User with Win7 complained PDF did not open in IE, and she got the following error.
I removed Adobe Reader and left the Acrobat alone. Checked IE add-on to make sure all Adobe add-on are enabled. Check the default program associated with PDF. All were good but the user still could not open and got the small black icon on the top left corner of the IE.

Then I found out this good article here, and modified the registry to resolve the issue.

UltraTax Transmittal Letter Not Printing Properly...

As soon as our old Xerox 5655 network printers have been replaced with new generations, Xerox 7855 and 5955, we start to experience printing problem on Transmittal Letter in Ultrax - the company logo will not print even it shows up properly in the print preview and print to PDF just fine.

I don't think it's the program issue but I still called in Ultrax support and hoped to get some advises. They offered few tips but did not fix the issue. Then I called to my current Xerox vendor (they are not Xerox direct), and THEY HAD NO IDEA. I thought they as the "Vendor" with their internal resources like software support should be GOOD but I am Fxxking wrong. They are USELESS.

Finally I figured out myself and it's quite easy. All I needed to do is go to the print driver, Printing Preference, Advanced tab, expand "Driver", Enable the "Enhance Printing Feature". Now the company logo is printed out on letter properly.

Final thought: we were not happy with our previous Xerox agent because we did not think they as "agent" have enough resources and authority to support us. We needed to contact Xerox direct for support and supplies. However, based on the experiences with the new Xerox 'vendor' only for few times, we could have made the mistake to switch to the 'vendor'....
